Introduction to Laboratory

The Key Open Laboratory on Cloud Physical Environment of China Meteorological Bureau was established in 1989, and it is the national-level researching department in this specialty. It is leading in the research of the basic theory, methods and technical application of the cloud precipitation physics and artificial influence weather, and it also holds the functions of scientific and technological support, large-scale scientific testing and scientific and technologic interaction between China and foreign countries of artificial influence weather; it has obtained a series of important scientific and technologic results and is very influential in China and the world. 


The positioning of the laboratory: Sufficiently utilizing the advantages on talents, equipment and testing and practicing the opening and flexible operation mechanism when facing the international frontier development and important national demands. Performing the research on the theory and new technologies and new methods of cloud and artificial influence weather, the important field scientific test and indoor experiment as for the important and critical scientific and technologic problems restricting the development of artificial influence weather, and performing the operational transformation of the scientific research achievements.

The researching directions of the laboratory:

1. The research on the formation mechanism of cloud and fog and the field test, it mainly performed research and development of the formation of cloud precipitation, the mechanism and method of artificial influence weather and field observation testing and numerical mode.

2. The research on the indoor experiment on cloud physics and artificial influence weather, and it mainly performs the research on cold cloud chamber and ice-forming catalyst, the research on warm cloud chamber and hygroscopic catalyst, and the research on hail and wind tunnel simulation.

3. The critical technology research and development and operational conversion of artificial influence weather, it mainly deals with the research and development of the critical technology of artificial influence weather, such as effect verification and development and utilization of atmospheric and water resources, and it will improve the operational transformation of the scientific research achievements, and provide scientific and technologic support to artificial influence weather.


The laboratory possesses a comprehensive experiment building with the construction area of about 3100 sqm, and the experiment equipment with the total price of 50 million Yuan.


The laboratory has established many united laboratories (centers) with Peking University, China Academy of Weapon Science and the Government of Jilin Province, and also cooperates with many countries on researching.
