The predecessor of Lushan Cloud Station is Lushan Climate Control Institute of Jiangxi Province founded in 1959. The institute was merged with Cloud Laboratory of Central Observatory in 1967 and formed Cloud Physics Institute of Central Meteorological Administration. Most of personnel of Lushan Cloud Physics Institute were migrated back to Beijing by National Meteorological Administration in 1978 and it changed its name to Artificial Influence Climate Institute of Academy of Meteorological Science of National Meteorological Administration. The part in Lushan changed its name to Lushan Cloud Test Station of Academy of Meteorological Science of National Meteorological Administration, and now it is called Lushan Cloud Test Station of Academy of Meteorological Science of China. Lushan Cloud Test Station is located in Lushan Mountain Scenery Spot of Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province. There the average annual raining day is 172, and the monthly number is 14, the average annual foggy day is 196, and it is the natural and ideal place where the cloud physical observation and scientific testing can be performed.

During 1960-1980, the scientific researcher performed large amount of cloud observation and research in Lushan Mountain and accumulated large amount of observation materials on cloud, rain, ice crystal and raindrop size distribution. They have obtained 2461 portions of materials on cloud microphysics and more than 5000 portions of materials on raindrop size distribution and they have made important contributions to the fundamental research of mountainous cloud in China.

Currently China Academy of Meteorological Science in investigating and design plans and reinforcing the construction of auxiliary and fundamental conditions for the scientific testing of Lushan Cloud Test Station, and the station will be constructed to the test field for cloud physics and artificial influence weather in China and provide the researching platform for formation of mountainous cloud, its microphysical structure and evolutional rules as well as the testing for artificial cloud removal.
