> The field thunder test in Guangzhou

Guangzhou Field Thunder Testing Base was established in 2005 and it is located in Guangzhou of Guangdong Province. The annual thunderstorm day in this area exceeds 80 days, and it has provided good weather conditions for researching thunder. Under the firm support of Chinese Academy of Meteorological SciencesandGuangdong (Provincial) Meteorological Serviceand after the construction in the recent years, the base has possessed the software and hardware conditions for the testing on manual thunder leading, comprehensive observation of physical features of thunder, lightning positioning system, development of lightning alarming technology and thunder protection. Etc. At the same time, it can satisfy the requirements of R&D and testing for some testing equipment. The testing base has performed the comprehensive observation testing on thunder in many aspects and obtained large amount of observation information with high quality, as well as abundant achievements in terms of thunder supervision, alarming and protection.


After the continual construction for many years, the observation station for manual thunder leading and natural thunder has been built into the thunder testing base composed of the observation point in Conghua, optical observation point and testing field for thunder leading. Among them, 4 laboratories and observation rooms and 2 expert buildings have been constructed in the observation points in Conghua, where the comprehensive observation on electricity, light, sound and magnet aspects for natural thunder can be performed. The occupation area of the field testing field is about 60mu, and the controllable area is about 1.2 sqkm. The large-scale testing facilities such as controlling room, generator roomForain Weather System,high-voltage transmission line,wind turbines and communication tower have been constructed. Some internationally advanced thunderstorm and thunder observing equipment have been bought, such as average electric field for atmosphere, oscilloscope and isolating,high speed oscilloscope,high speed camera,Spectrum Analyzer, collecting and recording device for high voltage; at the same time, it has also independently researched and developed the necessary detecting equipment such as fast-slow antenna, continual collecting and recording system, photo-electromagnetic integrated detecting system, etc; it performs the comprehensive observation testing on natural lightning, manually-triggered lightning and the lightning of high-rise buildings. Up till October, 2014, it has caused 74 thunders successfully and obtained large amount of comprehensive observation information on natural lightning and manually-triggered lightning, and made foundation for the research on thunder physics and protective technology. The testing base has become the important platform to provide the scientific and technologic support for thunder supervision, thunder alarming and forecasting, thunder protection and other operations.

Guangzhou Field Thunder Testing Base,It has constructed the application platform for the fine comprehensive observation during the complex physical procedure of thunder and the field testing for the new thunder protection technology. It has developed and consummated the technology of manual thunder leading and led different kinds of thunder successfully and realized the synchronized highly-accurate and direct measurement of the current of 10A – 10000A level, and resolved the problems of synchronized observation of sound,light,electricand magnet of lightning channel in short distance as well as the synchronized collection of the multi-parameter lightning data and thunder protection test data in field environment, evaluated the detecting performance of the lightning positioning system in a quantitative way, performed the protecting testing of base station for communication and wind power generation under the realistic thunder and electromagnetic environment, and provided the important scientific data and theoretical foundation for the thunder research and the development of the new protection technologies. 


The platform on field testing and application of thunder has been applied in the technical testing of thunder protection for the wireless base station for communication,Forain Weather System,high-voltage transmission line,wind turbines,buried cables and surge protection devices, etc, and obtained the abundant first-hand information. The base has cultivated 7 doctors and more than 20 master postgraduates and formed a domestically and internationally influencing talent team.
